Dr. Dixon's Chiropractic and Educational Background
Dr. Joel Dixon graduated from Brock University with a Bachelor of Kinesiology Degree (Honours) in 2007. At Brock, Dr. Dixon completed his honours thesis on the effect of perceived confidence on balance. In 2012, Dr. Dixon became a licensed chiropractor in Ontario when he graduated from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College.
Dr. Dixon's Background in Sports
Dr. Joel Dixon is passionate about sports, specifically ice hockey. He is currently the team chiropractor for the Kitchener Dutchmen of the greater Ontario junior hockey league (GOJHL). Dr. Dixon provided medical coverage and therapy for Creative Artist Agencies 2016 Elite prospects camp in Toronto.
He was also one of a handful of chiropractors selected to be medical practitioners for the 2015 PANAM games. At the PANAM games, Dr. Dixon specifically worked with some of the best young soccer and karate athletes in the world.
Dr. Dixon has also provided medical coverage for local Rugby matches and OFSAA field hockey.
Dr. Dixon's additional Certifications
Dr Joel Dixon is an evidence-based chiropractor (healthcare provider.) He prides himself as being a chiropractor that stays current with the latest research. Dr. Dixon has taken additional courses to expand his knowledge.
This includes being certified as a Complete Concussion Management (CCMI) practitioner. CCMI is the preeminent concussion baseline testing, treatment and management company. CCMI utilizes the latest research on the pathophysiology, diagnosis and conservative treatment of concussions. CCMI also incorporates the return to play guidelines developed by the Chicago Blackhawks medical staff.
Dr. Dixon has completed the contemporary medical acupuncture course at McMaster University under the tutelage of the world renowned sports medical doctor, Alejandro Elorriaga Claraco.
In addition, Dr. Dixon completed training in vestibular rehabilitation through APTEI. The vestibular system is responsible for your sense of balance and spatial awareness. Vestibular impairment can cause vertigo, dizziness, visual dysfunction, nausea and blurred vision. Vestibular dysfunction can occur insidiously or after a traumatic event, i.e concussion.
Dr. Dixon also received his medical sports first responders through sports physiotherapy Canada. Dr. Dixon is also a certified first aid and CPR instructor with the Canadian Red Cross.
Continuing Education Courses Seminars Dr. Dixon has Attended
Dr. Joel Dixon has also attended numerous seminars including the analysis of a runner's gait and commonly associated injuries (Dr. Dixon has given numerous talks at the Running Room on this topic), the biomechanics of an optimal golf swing to maximize performance and minimize the risk of injury. Dr. Dixon learned the principles and therapeutic application of shockwave therapy from orthopedic surgeon and sports medical doctor, Robert Gordon. Dr. Gordon is the most experienced orthopedic surgeon in North America at treating patients with shockwave therapy. Further seminars include a myofascial release (MRT), athletic taping methods, instrument assisted soft tissue (Graston technique), orthotics and injury specific rehabilitative exercises.
